La Catrina: Churros, Culture, and a Story Built from Passion

At La Catrina, every churro tells a story. What started as a small idea shared by students with a passion for creating something of their own has grown into one of Ottawa’s favourite spots for authentic Mexican treats.

Founded in 2013, La Catrina began as a humble churro cart, bringing freshly made churros to festivals and events throughout the city. At the time, churros were still unfamiliar to many people in Ottawa, so the team focused on introducing the community to their craft one bite at a time. By offering their churros at festivals for just $1, they were able to share their culture, connect with new customers, and build a loyal following.

As demand grew, so did the business. The team expanded from a food cart to a food truck, finding new ways to bring their flavours to more people while overcoming the challenges that come with growing a small business. Eventually, their journey led them to open their own brick-and-mortar location on Capella Street in Nepean, creating a space where customers can experience not only their food, but the warmth and culture behind it.

What makes La Catrina’s story so special is the heart behind the business. Their goal has always been about more than serving delicious churros. They are passionate about sharing Mexican culture with the Ottawa community and creating an experience that makes every visitor feel welcomed, connected, and transported.

At GoodStory, we love celebrating local businesses that are built with purpose, passion, and a commitment to their community. La Catrina is a perfect example of what can happen when a dream is nurtured with hard work and dedication.

Be sure to visit La Catrina and experience their incredible churros, delicious food, and the story behind one of Ottawa’s beloved local businesses.
